Goals

1.To acquire futuristic creativity for developing new products and improving food safety, convenience and functionality in the interest of the implementation of safe and healthy foods for society in the future (knowledge);

2. To cultivate community mind-sets as collaborators, a sense of duty as experts and well-rounded character conducive to health and quality of life for mankind (virtue);

3. To foster human resources equipped with theoretical backgrounds, practical and leadership skills in the food industry and relevant research efforts in food processing, analysis and development, food safety and hygiene, and food science and biotechnology (expertise).

About the Major

As an applied science, the food science & tech major concerns the engineering aspects of the food industry which accounts for the second/third largest percentage of the GNP. The major deas with diverse topics such as the betterment of food safety, convenience and functionality as well as new product development.

Students acquire knowledge of a wide range of food manufacturing and storage methods, understand many physiochemical reactions and changes in nutrients and preferences arising in food processing, storage and retailing, gain and apply knowledge and skills for producing diverse functional food products including fermented and health supplement food products to contribute to the advancement of food industry, food safety and national health as experts.

With food safety and health drawing much attention from the public, the government has adopted the implementation of food safety as a national agenda, and proceeded with major policy tasks for toughening relevant regulations and fostering human resources in the food industry. Hence, career paths for Food Science & Tech students include public/private labs, public servants, teachers, food and catering industries.
